The Aviation industry, which is a part of the Aerospace industry, includes the activity surrounding mechanical flight and the aircraft industry. Aviation's humble beginning started with the Barn Stormers (early airshow days), to the U.S. government delivering mail which replaced the Pony Express, to airplanes being used as weapons of war, to Lindenberg crossing the Atlantic and making the world smaller, to the formation of airlines after World War II, and airlines carrying cargo. After the end of World War II, we saw the emergence of airlines. Today, we have airlines that not only move people but are dedicated to moving cargo. They move millions of metric tons of freight yearly, thus making it a global economic driver.
There are over five thousand airlines in the world. The largest airline by fleet size and people carried is American Airlines. In the U.S., the aviation industry provides a total of 87.7 million jobs worldwide.
